My brother and I had been eyeing up the Mercantour Alps for a few years since reading about it in Alex Roddie's blog. We set off with relatively little idea of what we were getting ourselves into. We traversed through the remains of encampments, visiting every refugio on our way. This was the first hiking trip abroad we had done together since a disastrous trip in Bulgaria.
